Gods and Sacred Mountains

In 800 A.D., the Indian mystic Guru Rinpoche established Buddhism in the entire Himalayan region. He managed to merge Buddhism with pre-Buddhist beliefs, by finding a place within this new religion for their Gods. Up until today, the Gods, which are embodied in natural phenomena, play a great role in the life of the Bhutanese.

The historical Buddha embodied himself in Guru Rinpoche in order to spread the teachings of Buddhism. He left behind religious scripts that encompass the philosophical legacy of Buddhism.
