The history of Bhutan | Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel

The cleric Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel (1594-1651), born in Tibet, is seen as the founder of the state and of Bhutanese identity. After being threatened in Tibet, he escaped to Bhutan, where he became the most powerful man of the country. Because of his charisma as religious dignitary, but also with the help of his military skills, he managed to unite the, till then, independent principalities to one theocratic state. With his cultural successes he laid the foundation for present-day Bhutanese society.
